Sedation & Positioning
You are given IV sedation to sleep comfortably. A bite block is placed in your mouth to protect your teeth.
Endoscopy & Guide Wire
The endoscope is passed to locate the narrowing. A guide wire is gently pushed across the stricture under X-ray (fluoroscopy) guidance.
Balloon inflation
A balloon catheter of appropriate diameter (e.g. 15mm to 18mm) is passed over the wire. It is filled with water under pressure, held for 1-2 minutes to stretch the stricture, and then deflated.
Visual Inspection
The balloon is removed, and the doctor passes the endoscope through the dilated area to verify that the narrowing has been safely opened.
